A teenage pupil arrives at the home of a teacher for a private lesson. He is ready to learn and eager to please. But as The Lesson continues, it soon becomes clear that his teacher has something more sinister in mind.

In The Chairs, an elderly couple spend their time throwing a strange party for even stranger people – non-existent ones. As the 'guests' arrive, the couple fulsomely welcome them by name and rank, with a growing number of chairs put out until the space is entirely filled with furniture - the very objects that give their lives meaning.

The leading figure of absurdist theatre and one of the great innovators of the modern stage, Eugene Ionesco (1904-94) did not write his first play until 1950. He went on to become an internationally renowned master of modern drama, famous for comic proportions and bizarre effects that allow his work to be simultaneously hilarious, tragic and profound.

Ionesco x2 presents The Lesson and The Chairs in new interpretations fit for a 21st century audience.
