Tokyo-based Dewandaru Dance Company will be in Kuala Lumpur for a special four-night only performance. KL audiences will have the opportunity to be mesmerised by two very different works. Pintu Amaterasu marked the company’s debut and it was showcased at the 2007 Sketsa Tari Bulan Ganjil in Surakarta while Hallucination is Rianto’s most recent solo work that was showcased at the Tokyo Performing Arts Market 2010.
In Pintu Amaterasu, Rianto attempts to develop a new direction for Javanese dance by creating something new, drawing inspiration from both Japanese and Javanese mythology and culture. The sunlight of Amaterasu is always there to protect the Japanese, lighting its path of progress. In Java, the Nyi Roro Kidul’s presence is felt everywhere and it is she who validates the appointment of Javanese kings through her marriage with them. Another important element of Javanese culture is the goddess of fertility and earth, Dewi Sri, who blesses the rice harvest, the lifeline of people in Java. Pintu Amaterasu or Amaterasu Gate is a meeting point of both cultures and the piece will be performed by Miray Kawashima, Ishimoto Kae, Yasutani Eri, Wirastuti Susilaningtyas, Agus Margianto and Boby Ari Setiawan.
Hallucination is a solo piece choreographed and performed by Rianto after he came across Shoko Tendo’s book Yakuza Moon. He describes the performance as an interpretation of hallucinations as an ugly but beautiful world that only some people can feel. Hallucinations enable us to experience things without the need for stimulus from the outside world. Each hallucination itself is a facet of one’s personality, so Rianto does not assume hallucinations to be nasty things. Rianto focuses on the expression of loneliness and struggle of one who has gone into hallucinations.
